Why a licence does not guarantee an account
A trade licence from your emirate's economic department (the Department of Economy and Tourism, DET, in Dubai; ADDED in Abu Dhabi; SEDD in Sharjah) or a free zone lets you trade. It does not oblige a bank to open an account for you. Each bank applies its own risk policy under the rules of the Central Bank of the UAE, and a new company with no trading history sits near the top of the risk scale.
Applications that stall tend to share a few features. The business model is hard to explain in two sentences. The shareholders live abroad and have never banked in the UAE. The company sells to customers in higher-risk countries. Or the documents disagree with each other: a trade name that differs by one word from the lease, or an activity that does not match the plan.
Understanding what the bank is trying to establish makes the process shorter. The bank wants to know who owns the company, where its money comes from, what it will do and who will pay it.
Choose the type of bank first
Traditional banks such as Emirates NBD, Mashreq, RAKBANK, ADCB and First Abu Dhabi Bank offer full corporate services, trade finance and branch support. They ask for more documents and usually take longer.
Digital business banks, for example Wio and Mashreq NEO BIZ, open accounts faster and with lower or no minimum balances, but their limits on cash deposits, cheques and international transfers can be tighter. Check the tariff against how you actually trade.
A common route for new companies is to open a digital account first to start trading, then apply for a traditional account once there are three to six months of activity and bank statements to show. Both banks will ask about the other, so say so honestly.
The documents banks ask for
Prepare one folder with clean, current copies. Expect to be asked for:
- Trade licence, memorandum or articles of association, and the share certificate or ownership record
- Registered tenancy contract (Ejari in Dubai, Tawtheeq in Abu Dhabi), or the free zone lease or flexi-desk agreement
- Passport, UAE visa and Emirates ID for each shareholder and authorised signatory; proof of residential address
- Board resolution naming the signatories, and a power of attorney if someone signs on the owner's behalf
- A business plan or company profile of two to four pages, with expected monthly turnover, main customers and suppliers
- Six months of personal bank statements for the main shareholder, and evidence of the source of funds such as a salary letter, sale agreement or previous company accounts
- Contracts, invoices or quotations that show real customers
Banks also ask for a tax residency declaration and, increasingly, for the company's Tax Registration Number (TRN) once it exists. Keep Arabic documents translated by a certified legal translator.
Write a business plan the compliance team can read
The plan is read by a compliance officer, not an investor. Say who the customers are, in which countries, in what currency, how they pay and how much each order is worth. Name two or three suppliers and the country they are in.
Give numbers a bank can test: expected monthly deposits of AED 80,000, ten transactions a month, a typical payment of AED 8,000. When the account opens and the real activity differs sharply from the plan, the bank notices and may freeze or close the account.
If you trade in goods that pass through the UAE, say where they are stored and who clears them. If you provide services, describe the contract and the deliverable. A plan that fits on one page and answers these questions beats ten pages of market research.
Timeline and minimum balance in 2026
As of October 2026, these are typical timings. A digital business account can open in 3 to 10 working days. A traditional bank typically takes 2 to 6 weeks from a complete file, and 8 weeks or more if the bank asks for further documents or if the shareholders are non-resident.
Minimum balances for traditional business accounts typically run from AED 10,000 to AED 50,000, and some banks set AED 100,000 or more for premium packages. Below the minimum, banks charge a monthly fee. Ask for the tariff in writing, including the fees for cheque books, outward international transfers and account closure.
Many banks open the account in two steps: a letter or account number first, then access to online banking and cards after a first deposit and a compliance review. Do not issue invoices with the new IBAN until the bank confirms the account is active.
What a bank account consultant does, and what no one can promise
A good consultant reviews your file before submission, fixes inconsistencies, helps write the plan, chooses the bank that suits your profile and prepares you for the compliance call. Fees are typically AED 1,000 to 5,000 per application.
No consultant decides the outcome. Approval belongs to the bank. Be wary of anyone who guarantees an account, claims an insider at the bank or asks for payment into a personal account. Ask what happens to the fee if the bank declines. A fair answer is a partial or full refund, or a free second application to another bank, written in the agreement.
Check the consultant's own trade licence first, as our guide on verifying a trade licence describes, and ask for the licence activity, which should be business or management consultancy.
If the bank declines your application
Banks rarely explain a refusal in detail. Ask politely for the main reason, and note whether the decline came from the branch or from the compliance team.
Fix the likely cause first: a vague plan, a flexi-desk address that the bank dislikes, missing evidence of funds, or a mismatch between the activity and the customers you describe. A leased office with a registered tenancy contract (Ejari in Dubai) helps with several banks.
After a decline, a second application with a corrected file in 2 to 4 weeks is usually reasonable. If you urgently need to receive payments, open a digital business account in the meantime, and keep your transaction history clean. Banks read the statements.
Any AED amounts in this guide are typical ranges for Dubai as of October 2026; prices in other emirates are often similar or lower. They are not quotes and not offers: real prices depend on the job, the company and the date, so ask for written quotes.
Frequently asked questions
Can I open a UAE company account without being in the UAE?
Some banks accept remote applications for free zone companies, but most traditional banks still ask the signatory to attend once for biometrics or an Emirates ID check. Digital banks often finish the process through an app with a UAE visa and Emirates ID.
Do I need a registered tenancy contract (Ejari in Dubai) to open a company account?
Mainland companies normally provide a registered tenancy contract: Ejari in Dubai, Tawtheeq in Abu Dhabi. Free zone companies provide the zone lease or flexi-desk agreement. Some banks look more kindly on a full office lease than on a flexi-desk.
How much money should I deposit when the account opens?
Deposit at least the bank's stated minimum, often AED 10,000 to 50,000, and be ready to show where it came from. A first deposit that matches your plan reads better to compliance than a round number from an unknown source.
Is it legal for a company to use a personal account while waiting?
Taking company payments into a personal account can breach your licence terms and the bank's, and it complicates VAT and Corporate Tax records. Use a digital business account or wait for the corporate account instead.
