In the UAE only a licensed advocate can appear in court for you. A legal consultant advises, drafts and negotiates, and in Dubai may be a foreign-qualified lawyer registered for a defined area of law.

Practising licences come from the Ministry of Justice or, in Dubai, the Dubai Legal Affairs Department (in Abu Dhabi, the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, ADJD), and the law firm needs its own trade licence.

Which body handles what

  • DIFC Courts: a DIFC case in Dubai needs a lawyer with rights before them (ADGM Courts are the Abu Dhabi equivalent).
  • Dubai Courts: civil, commercial and rental matters in Dubai.
  • Courts in other emirates: Abu Dhabi has its own courts under the ADJD; the other emirates use their own or federal courts.
  • MOHRE: labour claims usually start here.
  • Rental Dispute Settlement Centre: landlord and tenant claims in Dubai; the other emirates have their own rental dispute committees.

What it costs

Fees vary with the matter, so agree scope and price in writing before work starts. Commonly:

  • Consultation: AED 300 to 1,500
  • Contract drafting: AED 1,500 to 10,000
  • Debt recovery: often 5 to 15 percent of the amount recovered
  • Certified translation: AED 100 to 200 per page, because court documents are in Arabic

These are typical Dubai prices; in the other emirates prices are often similar or somewhat lower.

Before you pay

Ask who will handle your file, how often you will get updates, and whether the power of attorney is limited to this case.

Check the badge first, then read the reviews and the response rate. Ask for a written quote that names the company on the licence, and pay only to an account in that company's name. See typical prices in our price guide.

Frequently asked questions

How can I check that a lawyer is licensed?

Ask for the practising licence number and the firm's trade licence, then confirm both with the Ministry of Justice (or the Dubai Legal Affairs Department in Dubai, the ADJD in Abu Dhabi) and the trade licence register of the emirate. Only a licensed advocate can appear in UAE courts on your behalf.

How much does a lawyer cost in the UAE?

A consultation is commonly AED 300 to 1,500, a contract review AED 500 to 3,000 and drafting AED 1,500 to 10,000. Court cases are quoted per stage or as a percentage of the claim, and court and translation fees are charged separately. These are typical Dubai prices; in the other emirates prices are often similar or somewhat lower.

What are the red flags when hiring a lawyer?

Walk away from guaranteed outcomes, fees demanded in cash without a receipt, claims of a contact in the court or police, and a request to sign a power of attorney broader than your case needs. No honest lawyer can promise a result because a judge decides.

Do I need a lawyer for a rental dispute?

Not always. In Dubai the Rental Dispute Settlement Centre accepts claims from landlords and tenants directly, and many cases turn on the Ejari-registered contract and the evidence; the other emirates have their own rental dispute committees. A lawyer helps when the sum is large, say above AED 50,000, or the contract is unusual.
