Electricity in the UAE is run by each emirate's utility: the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) in Dubai, ADDC in Abu Dhabi (AADC in Al Ain), SEWA in Sharjah and the local utility elsewhere. The line that matters most is between maintenance and modification.
Maintenance or modification
- Maintenance: replacing a socket, a switch or a light fitting on an existing point.
- Modification: a new circuit, a distribution board change, more load or an EV charger. It needs a contractor approved by the utility (DEWA in Dubai), often an approval before work starts and your landlord's written consent.
A licensed company also carries insurance for damage to your property, which a freelancer with a toolbox does not, so check the trade licence before you let anyone open the board.
What it costs in 2026
- Call-out and inspection: AED 100 to 200
- Socket replacement: AED 50 to 120
- RCD installation: AED 250 to 600
These are typical Dubai prices; in the other emirates prices are often similar or somewhat lower.
In Dubai, a DEWA connection in a rented flat needs your Ejari contract and Emirates ID, with a refundable deposit currently AED 2,000 for an apartment and AED 4,000 for a villa.
Before you pay
Faults in the building's common parts are the management's job, not yours.
Check the badge first, then read the reviews and the response rate. Ask for a written quote that names the company on the licence, and pay only to an account in that company's name. See typical prices in our price guide.

Frequently asked questions
What licence should an electrician have?
The company needs a trade licence (DET in Dubai, ADDED in Abu Dhabi, SEDD in Sharjah) with electrical works or building maintenance activity, and modifications must be done by a contractor approved by the utility (DEWA in Dubai). Ask for the licence number, the utility approval and the technician's ID before work starts, and keep the completion certificate with your tenancy papers.
How much does an electrician cost in the UAE?
Call-out and inspection usually cost AED 100 to 200, a socket or switch AED 50 to 120, a breaker AED 120 to 300 and a new point AED 150 to 400. A distribution board upgrade runs AED 800 to 3,000 and an EV charger installation AED 1,500 to 4,500. These are typical Dubai prices; in the other emirates prices are often similar or somewhat lower.
What are the safety red flags?
Walk away from anyone who works on live circuits without isolating the breaker, has no test equipment, uses cable thinner than the existing run or says a new circuit needs no approval. Unbranded breakers and sockets are false economy, and in a fire they are the first thing an insurer asks about.
Do I need utility approval for an EV charger?
Yes. In Dubai, DEWA has an application route for home chargers and the installer should handle it; in the other emirates, ask the local utility. Ask for the approval reference and a completion certificate before paying in full, and check your landlord and building management have agreed in writing. A charger fitted without approval can void insurance.
